How to Prepare Cosmetic Tube Artwork Before Mass Production

2026-09-10

A Cosmetic Tube can look perfect on a computer screen and still create problems during production.

The reason is simple: packaging artwork has to work on a physical tube, not just on a digital layout.

The tube has a curved surface. The printable area is limited. Seams, shoulders, caps and tails can affect where graphics appear. Small text may become difficult to read, while colors can look different after printing.

For beauty brands preparing a new skincare, personal care or cosmetic product, reviewing the artwork before mass production can prevent unnecessary revisions and delays.

Start With the Final Tube Structure

Do not finalize the artwork before the tube structure is confirmed.

Before preparing the final design, make sure you know:

  • Tube diameter, length, capacity, shoulder shape, neck size, cap type, printable area, tail sealing area, tube material, printing method.

EMILY's current range includes round and oval plastic squeeze tubes as well as specialized formats, so artwork should always be prepared against the actual tube specification rather than a generic template.

Confirm the Printable Area

One of the most common artwork mistakes is assuming that the entire visible tube surface can be used for graphics.

Before designing the final artwork, ask the manufacturer for a production template showing print boundaries and physical constraints.

Keep Important Information Away From Seams

The tube seam is not the best place for critical information. Pay particular attention to your logo, product name, key claims, usage instructions, warning information, barcode, and regulatory information.

Consider How Curvature Changes the Design

A flat artwork file does not always represent how the final tube will look. On a curved surface, text can appear narrower and logos may look distorted. Always check designs against physical tube dimensions.

Choose Colors With the Printing Process in Mind

Color selection should not be based only on a monitor. Tube base color, ink, and surface finish significantly alter the final appearance.

Decide Whether the Tube Base Is Part of the Design

EMILY offers multiple tube materials and surface treatments, so the artwork should be developed together with the selected tube structure and finish.

Give the Front Panel a Clear Hierarchy

The front of the tube should communicate the most important information quickly:

Brand → Product Name → Product Type → Key Benefit → Net Contents

A Simple Pre-Production Artwork Checklist

  • Tube dimensions confirmed
  • Printable area confirmed
  • Barcode & Regulatory text checked
  • Physical sample reviewed
